Scarabeo Camp

About 35 kilometers from Marrakech, a charming bivouac of a dozen oriental-inspired tents awaited us in the small rocky desert of Agafay. After a tempting breakfast, a 4×4 picked up us from our riad and whisked us out to the Agafay’s barren grandeur to live out our Out of Africa fantasies.

So chic and timeless, the Scarabeo is an encampment conceived for those who seek desert romance in the most beautiful corners of Morocco. The sheer beauty of the arid landscape is the main lure. Ochre in the morning light, apricot by midday, pink at dusk… No wonder why this white tent camp is one of the most Instagram-worthy place on earth!

A two-night stay at Scarabeo Camp is the perfect amount of time to appreciate this intriguing place. Days here are slow, calm and serene. There were so many incredible moments, it’s difficult to pick one! I distinctly remember waking up early to admire the sun slowly rising from our tent before feasting on a delectable array of breakfast. Then, we would bring a book and nestle into one of the many comfortable seating areas.

I also loved taking a siesta with only the sound of a blowing tent cloth and the giggles of other guests enjoying a game of Pétanque. Or, when we explored the biscuit-colored hills by camel at dusk. Back at the camp, we walked up the candlelit path to a romantic table for two. Under the big yellow moon and a canopy of stars, we cherished quiet moments of reflection and stillness by the fire while sipping chilled glasses of rose.

Dreaming under a sky awash in stars and rising with the first hints of the North African sun is absolutely indescribable!

Desert Dreams

Dotted throughout a vast terrain, the 15 tents -8 Double Suites, 2 Twin Suites and 5 Family Suites- are beautifully appointed with authentic Moroccan decor.

Our bright white tent was an inviting retreat filled with natural fabrics in neutral colors, Berber rugs, and vintage finds plus an en-suite bathroom with toilet, mirror and sink. The retro-safari aesthetic gives you the impression of being on an expedition from another time.

Before going to bed, we would sit in the small shaded wooden deck in front of our tent and gaze up the star-studded sky. It was then when we realized how fortunate we were to have that majestic nothingness lying before us.

As a Moroccan, Agafay Desert is a fake Desert in Morocco. The real desert is Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga where you can experience the camel rides, sleeping in desert tents, enjoying drum music around fire, beautiful pictures of sunset and sunrise in Sahara, visit Berber nomads, Gnaoua music in khamlia and many other surprises.
