Under The Tuscan Sun film locations-Positano

I watched Under The Tuscan Sun during a flight to Hawaii. I was completely amazed by the stunning petit village where Frances has a romantic affair with a mysterious Italian gentleman called Marcello. When the film ended, I looked at Javi who was sound asleep and whispered in his ear: “I have a new destination in mind: Positano!”.

A few months later, we were having iced-cold limoncello in charming terraces, swimming in cristal-clear waters, climbing never-ending steep stairwells, soaking up the sun on Spiaggia Grande and dining with breathtaking views to the ocean.

The unsurpassed beauty of the alluring Amalfi Coast has been featured in numerous films such as Only you, A good Woman and the classic, Beat the Devil.

 The Novel

The movie Under the Tuscan Sun is based on Frances Mayes´ best-selling memoir of the same name. The novel remained on The New York Times bestseller list for two and a half years and was followed by Bella Tuscany, In Tuscany and Bringing Tuscany Home.

In this evocative memoir, she details her experience of buying and restoring  an abandoned villa called Bramasole in the Tuscan countryside. Surrounded by olive groves, sun flower fields, fruit trees and vinegars she discovers the authentic pleasures of Italian life.

 Villa LauraBramasole

Nestled on a hill near the ancient town of Cortona, Villa Laura is the charming house used in the film Under The Tuscan Sun. After being abandoned for some years, Villa Laura was lovingly restored in 2006. If you long for a memorable holiday, Villa Laura is one of the most beautiful villas for rent in the area.

        Positano Pier

One of my favourite scenes is when the elegant Diane Lane arrives to Positano in order to surprise Marcello. In the pier, she calls over a policeman to ask if he could drive her through the town.

Diane Lane is hit by a wave in Positano´s main pier which is the departure point for pleasant excursions to Sorrento, Capri, Naples as well as many other beautiful places.

As you can see in the picture, locals and tourists love gathering together enjoying an iced lemonade or a gelato as they watch the breathtaking scenery.

Marcello´s appartment

The policeman drives her through the picturesque narrow streets of Positano on his motorbike as the wind flutters her hair. Impressed by the beauty of the pastel-painted houses perched on the cliff  and the stunning views to the ocean, she awaits her lover to come down.

You will love to hear the scene was filmed on a balcony at Hotel California. So, in your trip to Positano, don´t forget to book well in advance the very same room where Diane Lane and Raoul Bova had their passionate love affair!
