Elvis Presley Birthplace, Tupelo

We simply love Elvis…If our lives had a soundtrack, The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, would  definitely be part of it.

It is usual to find Javi cooking dinner at home to the sound of “Mistery Train” or bathing Jazz, our dog, with “Heartbreak Hotel” at full volume. We never get tired of his music.

Elvis Birthplace and Graceland had always been at the top of our list. However, we never found the right moment to visit them. One day, while planning our trip to New Orleans, Elvis  Presley´s “It´s Now or Never started to play…

ELVIS BIRTHPLACE

After driving for so long we arrived in Tupelo at last. We couldn´t believe we were going to see the tiny two-room house where Elvis was born on January 8, 1935.Sitting in the front porch swing was like steeping back in time. It was there where the legend of Elvis began!

In 1946, Gladys Presley brought her son Elvis to Tupelo Hardware in order to buy him a birthday present. He wanted to buy a 22 caliber rifle but Gladys succeeded in buying a guitar instead…The rest is history! Tupelo Hardware displays a photo of the guitar on the wall where the original once hung…So don´t forget to visit this famous store in your trip to Tupelo!

Apart from the humble house were the Presleys lived, Elvis´childhood church can be visited too. For Elvis fans this wooden chapel is priceless. It was here where he learned to sing and strum the guitar.

From the earlier days of his life Elvis was exposed to Southern gospel music. His mum once told a reporter: “When Elvis was a little fellow, he would slide of my lap, run down the aisle and scramble up to the platform of the church. He would stand looking up the choir and try to sing with them. He was too little to know the words, but he could carry the tune“.

Elvis Presley´s Museum & Gift Shop

Opened in 1992 and completely renovated in 2006, Elvis Presley´s Museum consists mainly of the personal collection of Janelle MCcomb, a Tupelo resident and long-time family friend of Elvis and his parents.

Just steps from the birthplace, the gift shop has more than 2,000 souvenir items for sale. Apparently, there are souvenirs unique to the birthplace and sold only there, so if you are a fan of Elvis I´m sure you´ll find the right piece of Elvis memorabilia.

Elvis Presley Museum Birthplace and Museum features:

  •    “Elvis at 13” statue
  •     Fountain of Life
